The Best Of Both Worlds: A Motor Sailing Boat

Sailing is a passion for many. It is the thing that keeps them grounded, ironic as that may sound. They live life, taking the good with the bad because they know that they are never too far from a weekend on the water. A weekend in which they can leave behind all the troubles of their everyday lives.

Sailing requires knowledge and skill. It is not something to be enjoyed for an afternoon by complete novices. Because of the energy and effort that goes into learning how to sail, and sail well, people feel such a close connection and become almost addicted to this relaxing sport.

The investment of time and practice also causes people to develop some strong opinions and views about sailing and sailing boats. One of the quite commonly held opinions among sailors is that a motor sailboat can be neither an optimal sailboat, nor a very good motor boat.

This opinion is being challenged by modern designs. Now there are motor sailboats on the market that combine the best of these two types of boats in a way that doesn’t detract much from the virtues of either of them.

Much research has gone into finding a good balance and making a successful hybrid of these two, previously irreconcilable types of boats. With a few alterations in the structure of the boat, it is possible to sail well and also to be able to motor through the water in a well balanced and speedy way.

The hull is formed in a way that allows for good conditions for both sailing and motoring. A few other tricks are implemented in order to help the boat maintain the balance and float necessary to be able to plane.

One of the tricks is for the crew to be situated aft. This allows the specially designed vessel to be able to sail, or motor, over its own wake, which has been seen as a major problem in previous designs.

Another problem has been for the boat to maintain balance while circling around, such as in the instance of retrieving a water skier. This problem is solved by altering the underside of the boat into a shape similar to that on a power boat. This unique feature causes the boat to be more buoyant and prevents it from flipping over during this type of maneuver.

The motor sailing boat of our day is no longer something to laugh at or to shrug off as not intended for the serious sailor. In fact, one could argue that a sailboat is quite limited in its abilities, as is a motor boat. Combine the two, however, and you have a vessel that is fit for both types of recreation. And with the current designs and models available, you don’t have to give up the quality or speed of either your sailing, or your motoring experience!
